Creature Conversation
We caught up with one of the ghouls last week pre-show, and asked him what makes Scary Acres so scary. We’ll call him B.R., to preserve his anonymity-who knows how his fellow ghouls would exact revenge on him for telling their secrets!
The key to Scary Acres is the variety of horrors. “Everyone gets scared by different things-whether it’s gory chainsaw guys or evil clowns,” says B.R., “so we have something for everyone.” The location also comes into play, utilizing all the spooky aspects of being outdoors, unprotected, at night. Loud, unexpected bangs and shouts floating over the corn, the dim shadows of the moonlit corn maze, the whisper of the wind through the trees…all these features come together for an experience that is as frightening as it is fun.
B.R. uses the psychology of fear, or the fight or flight instinct, to allow him to zero in on each of his victims, and his grin turns wicked as he talks about his desire to “get into someone’s head, really find what scares them, and cause that chain reaction.” Chain reaction? “When one person gets scared, it’s just one scream. But in a group, they scare each other. The fear escalates,” says B.R., “but a few minutes later, everyone’s laughing together. They can’t believe how scared they got, and how much fun it is. That’s when I know I did my job.”
Thanks, B.R., for doing your job and scaring us every weekend at Scary Acres!
Stay tuned for more info and interviews this month.
